Hello, bloggers!

Love Dilemma

Have you ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn’t have?

Where do the boundaries lie between what’s right and what’s wrong?

Who decides?

Did you seize your chance regardless of the consequences?

Only to leave a hurricane of broken-hearted destruction in your wake?

Or did love overcome the odds?

Did you let ‘the one’ slip out of your grasp, because you thought it was the right thing to do? Or you were too scared to act.

Has your heart ever skipped a beat, at the tilt of a stranger’s head, locked gazes and wondered if they were ‘the one’? But passed on without pausing to even learn their name?

Is your life tainted with the regret of lost opportunities and an unfulfilled heart?

Does your heart yearn and lament – what if?

In my novel, Lodestone, Sabrina is confronted with difficult choices when she falls for Micah, a prospect monk. He has yet to take his vows, but he has a talent unseen in Sha’La’Shang for generations. Does Sabrina steal him away from this glorious future?

What would you do? I wonder if you’d make the same choices that Sabrina did.

10 Quick Tips for Authors

-1st drafts. Write as if no one else is ever going to read them.

-Sort out POV (Point of View) before you start each scene – decide whose perspective is filtering the scene.

-Use all your senses, including sight, taste, texture, sound, smell, and instinct.

-Show and don’t tell. Make the reader experience the action and emotions.

-Beware overuse of dialogue tags (especially the ‘ly’ telling tags).

-Start with action and weave in backstory as required.

-Use active verbs.

-Beware information dumps.

-Make each character’s voice unique and vary their mannerisms.

-Have fun! Enjoy creating new worlds.

Lodestone (Witch-Hunt) (1)

Excerpt Lodestone – Sabrina.

A shirtless youth, with his back to her, hummed as he brushed a dark horse. The horse was standing perfectly still as if the boy’s song had lulled him to sleep. Sabrina silently observed the prospect as he worked. He was tall with a slender build, but she could see the muscles in his tanned back and arms ripple with each stroke. His brown hair was caught up in an intricate knot threaded by two long feathers; one red, the other purple. She’d never met anyone like him before.

She shuffled forward to get a better view, but her brush whacked into the wooden partition. He whirled around and she found herself staring into the brownest eyes, framed by the longest lashes she’d ever seen. They gawked at each other for a moment before Sabrina rediscovered her tongue. “I … I was sent to care for your horses.”
He pointed with his brush, to the horses behind him and said, “I’ve finished the others. Only Alloni, the brown and white, needs attention.”

Sabrina scurried to the indicated stall. Where was his shirt? As if reading her thoughts, he casually reached down and grabbed a white shirt. Slowly, he pulled it over his damp shoulders and Sabrina hastily focused on the horse. Her strokes were a bit shorter and harder than she normally applied and the horse shifted beneath the brush. Before she could correct herself, strong fingers, radiating warmth, slipped over hers and a voice laced with musk, breathed into her ear. “Not so firm. Alloni likes long, languid strokes – like this.”

Heat blazed into spots on her cheeks as she followed his movements. After several strokes he said, “That’s it, you’ve got the knack of it now.”

He released her hand and stepped away. Sabrina felt as awkward as a new-born foal so she kept her eyes averted and silently busied herself with the horse. From outside, a muffled yell filtered through the stable and the boy said, “Deakon wants me. Will you be all right finishing up?”

She didn’t trust herself to speak. “Ah-ha.”

  1. I don’t know about others, Wendy, but I can empathize with most of your questions about loving someone we should not. It never ends well! And your writing tips are great! Thank you, and thank you, Marlena, for supporting her.

    1. Thanks Yvette – sadly I meet an author the other day who had published without doing any editing (made my toes curl). I hope her work is as polished as she thinks it is. I find my editors, proofreaders, and beta readers invaluable.
